Vale senior linebacker Brady Sharp pursues LaGrande running back Erik Jacobs during the season opening game at Vale High School’s Frank Hawley Stadium in Vale, OR on September 2, 2011.
First year Vale Viking head Coach Steve Luby had the team prepared for the season opener but sometimes the ball bounces the wrong way. The tough defensive play by the Vikings was neutralized by too many offensive drives ending with a turnover. But the team stayed focused and were on the verge of a win with a minute left in the game. The Vikings were five yards from a score but LaGrande made a goal line stand to preserve a 25-19 win. Despite the loss, the Vikings are tough and expectations are high for another playoff bound year.
The early season is always fun to photograph because the light is usually great. The face shields being sported by several of the players make it a little more challenging to get a good image since the shields often reflect light and obscure the face. Here are a few images from the game, I wish I was able to get more images but I ended up with more “photo fumbles” than one should have in a season.
Thanks for stopping by to take a look. I hope to make it to another Viking game soon. -Gregg
