Brittany Owens soars to a meet record 20-00.25 in the long jump during the YMCA Track and Field Invite on April 28, 2012 at Rocky Mountain High School, Meridian, Idaho.
It’s been over a year since I made it to a track meet. A long dry spell for me. Like many things it’s all about timing. My first stop was the jumps area where I arrived just in time to see Borah senior Brittany Owens long jump 18-11. A big jump by Idaho High School standards. Probably one of the top 10 jumps in Idaho history. Her next jump – Boom! 20-00.25, looked effortless. Crushed her 19-01 state meet record set in 2010 and currently ranks as the seventh best high school mark in the nation for the 2012 season.
It’s not often you get the opportunity to capture a record performance. Unfortunately what should have been the best frames were not – I was not in the right position to eliminate a distracting background, my depth of field was too deep, and my timing was off. The meet official holding the tape was kneeling down on almost all the other jumps. On this particular jump he elected to standup causing a major visual distraction in the image. I’m looking forward to getting another chance to get it right at the state meet.
Tim Severa, Jack Ward and a big group of volunteers put on another great meet. Thanks to head timer George Ragan for providing me with the results and roster info. It was fun to be back at the track taking pictures. Thanks for stopping by to take a look. -Gregg
